No sterile studio, no overproduction. The first Project single, Death Of Me, comes down the saloon doors of modern rock like a welcome kick. Created as a constantly shifting unit of current scene grizzled veterans by guitarist, songwriter James Davis (Shameless) this first offering isn’t one song, it’s a statement of intent, full throttle. It’s loud, it’s honest and it crackles with the undeniable energy of seasoned players locked in and loving every minute.

“Death of Me” begins right where you want to be, from the very first power chord. Think: denim, leather, cranked amps and the heat of musicians off each other in the moment. That’s the vibe because of that. It’s gloriously unpolished in all of the right ways: tight enough to groove, rough enough to feel authentically alive. Nothing’s filtered, no digital sheen covering up the raw power they showed here.

Leading this barnstorming lineup is Dennis Hill (The California Sunsets/Face to Face) who fits the wall of sound like a glove. With seasoned grit and unpretentious attitude, he delivers a voice of years in cutting through the din to demand attention, without theatrics. On his heels is Davis’s vision in the form of a devastating three guitar attack courtesy of Scott Shiflett (Eagles of Death Metal, Face to Face) and Erik Ferentinos (Stephen Pearcy’s Ratt). Their riffs are urgent and sun drenched, but they have serious punch, tapestry of power pop hooks and rock n roll swagger made for highway blasts.

It’s equally rock solid. On bass is Kevin Baldes (Lit) and Jimmy DeAnda (BulletBoys, George Lynch) on drums form the unshakable groove. There is no doubt about the chemistry – this is a band playing, off each others energy and the sheer enjoyment of that comes through to the listener.

With that late ’90s MTV spirit – raw, loud and not too concerned with the band playing in a room, the accompanying video fits like a glove. That’s the underlying authenticity of it: there’s nothing gimmicky, just friends making real noise. That’s rock music back from the gut. The infectious power-pop melody relates vividly to the unapologetic guitar grit, punched out with authority and passion by musicians who have lived it. The explosive first statement from The Project revolve flag concept promises thrilling diversity and delivers a potent, immediate hit of pure unadulterated rock energy. It should be turned up loud and let rip.
