It’s a thing about good synthwave, it’s like, I’m in a different place. Peel The Sun does that from first note. It immerses you into this cozy and somewhat disorienting universe, which seems like a movie you’ve already watched but forgot. It’s a feat seldom achieved.
The production here is really amazing. Each layer is in the correct position. The synths are rich and expressive, they carry a full emotional story without the need of a single word. This is an instrumental song and it really doesn’t need any additional sound. They don’t talk to you, the melodies do and they do a fine job of it.
The interesting bit is that it’s just slightly dark under everything. At first glance, it sounds like a throwback and a movie, and it is. There’s this quiet unease that runs through it that makes you slightly on edge. It’s like the old movie music where all seems well but you know something is going to go wrong. That is what makes the track so interesting.
The drums propel the music forward with genuine power and authority. Nothing feels accidental. VHS PANTY RIOT has a clear idea of what it’s creating and each and every production decision is in service of that end. If you’re into all things 80s inspired electronic music, then this is a track you’re going to want to come back to. It’s somewhere between the sentiment of a throwback and the fear of a nightmare. Peel The Sun is a wonderfully produced piece of music. Fully aware, confident and unforgettable.
